After receiving a Fulbright scholarship in 1992, Dr. Anastasiou headed to the University of Iowa where he studied Electrical Engineering and Physics and graduated with highest honors in 1996. Dr. Anastasiou continued his studies at Princeton University in the Electrical Engineering Department focusing on optoelectronics and doing his doctorate thesis on optical spatial solitons. At Princeton, Dr. Anastasiou became very interested in entrepreneurship and considered careers beyond academia. After obtaining his PhD in 2001 he decided to join OmniGuide Inc., a Cambridge Massachusetts optical fiber based start-up company that was spun out of MIT. There he was part of the research team that developed a novel type of surgical fiber system that provides the surgeon with accurate cutting and ablation in minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery. Dr. Anastasiou hopes to put his skills in good use and continue on research that improves lives right here at home.
