Collaborators: Prof. Marios D. Dikaiakos (UCY), Dr. Chryssis Georgiou (UCY), Prof. Evangelos P. Markatos (ICS/FORTH), Dr. Theodoros Kyprianou (ICU/ Nicosia General Hospital) FailRank: a novel framework for integrating and ranking information sources that characterize failures in a grid system. FailRank supports a wide array of failure extrapolation tasks by utilizing well established data exploratory analysis tools and state-of-the-art top-k query processing techniques. icGRID (Intensive Care Grid): a platform that enables the seamless integration the physical parameters acquired at Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of hospitals scattered around Europe. Our group implemented the UDP-based API of the Philips IntelliVue MP60, one of the most technologically advanced monitors on the market.

Collaborators: Dr. Michail Vlachos (T.J. Watson - Hawthorne/NY), Dr. Zografoula Vagena (Almaden - San Jose/CA). Distributed Top-K Query Processing: Worked on various distributed top-k query processing algorithms (design and experimental evaluation) that have applications in sensor and peer-to-peer networks. Our algorithms were implemented and tested on a real network of 75 workstations.

Mentors: Prof. Neal E. Young (UCR/Akamai) and Dr. Arthur W. Berger (Akamai/MIT). Group: Network Intelligence Lab Internet Tomography: Developed scalable techniques to index the network measurements that are continuously gathered by Akamai's Internet Mapper Infrastructure. I also developed ip2ip, which is a command-line tool that provides end-to-end latency estimates based on the collected and indexed measurements.

SOFTWARE SYSTEMS

• KSpot - Spotting the K Highest-ranked answers in Wireless Sensor Networks (2008): I supervised the development of the KSpot software system, a graphical user interface and ranking system for effectively monitoring the K highest-ranked answers to a query in a Wireless Sensor Network. KSpot deploys state-of-the-art distributed Top-k query processing algorithms in order to realize both snapshot queries and historic queries minimizing the consumption of system resources and prolonging the lifetime of the deployed sensor network. Additionally, KSpot is user-friendly and customizable featuring an intuitive user interface that enables the user to express declarative SQL-like queries over any ad-hoc scenario and to display the results graphically.

• ICGrid - Intensive Care Grid (2005-2007): I supervised the development of the ICGrid software system, a platform that enables the seamless integration the physical parameters acquired at Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of hospitals scattered around Europe. Our group implemented the UDP-based API of the Philips IntelliVue MP60, one of the most technologically advanced monitors on the market.

• MicroHash - Hash Index for Flash Memory on Sensor Devices (2004-2006): I designed and developed the MicroHash index, in the nesC language, which is tailored to the distinct characteristics of sensor devices. The structure was designed for the RiSe (Riverside Sensor) hardware platform which features an external SDMedia flash card. The index structure gracefully copes with wear-levelling, has a very small footprint (2-3KB) and offers access to the stored data by value.

• ip2ip - End-to-End latency estimation tool (Summer 2004): A tool that provides end-to-end latency estimates based on network measurements gathered by the Akamai Infrastructure. The tool continuously pre-processes network measurements (ping, traceroute, edgescape and others) and builds secondary storage indices which are utilized for providing latency estimates, geographic distance (long/lat), AS and CIDR information of individual ips. The tool was developed in perl.

• Peerware - P2P Simulation Infrastructure (2002-2004): A P2P simulation infrastructure on which researchers can benchmark the efficiency of various query routing algorithms. The system features a topology generator and visualization modules. Each peer uses the Lucene IR engine to index and query local resources. The system is implemented in JAVA and deployed on 75 workstations. It is currently being used by over 30 research groups around the world.

• ARS - Academic Review System (2003-2004): A Web-based system used to organize and prepare UCR's faculty review files. The system provides a customizable access control scheme which allows different groups of users to efficiently navigate, collaborate and share information on faculty review files. It is currently being used by hundreds of faculty and academic personnel users at the University of California - Riverside. http://ars.engr.ucr.edu/ (UCR access only)

• gnuDC - Gnutella Distributed Crawler (2002-2003): gnuDC is tool developed to obtain traffic measurements from the Gnutella network. These measurements provide useful insight into query patterns, protocol overheads and bottlenecks. It has a distributed architecture which enables the crawler to obtain measurements in a highly parallel way. It is implemented in Java, C++ and shell scripts.

• eyeShot - Multimedia Search Engine (2001-2002): A full-fledged multimedia search engine which uses its own high performance crawler and indexing modules to fetch and store multimedia objects based on the textual properties that characterize a given resource. • WAPEmail - A POP3 Gateway for Wireless Devices. (2001-2002): Wapemail is a POP3 Gateway for wireless mobile devices (wap phones, pda's). It first prefetches messages from e-mail accounts and then transcodes the messages into device specific formats. The proxy supports push (sms alerting) and pull models (wap, http) of information provision. (http://www.winmob.com/)

• eRACE - eXtensible Retrieval Annotation Caching Engine (1999-2001): eRACE is a middleware infrastructure designed to support the development and provision of intermediary services on Internet. eRACE collects information from several Internet sources and protocols (http,pop3,nntp) according to XML encoded eRACE profiles and then transcodes the content to make it accessible to users with different connection modalities. • Helpdesk - An online Helpdesk System. (1999-2000): A Web-based Helpdesk system, which supports the activities of the research and instructional computing laboratories at the University of Cyprus. The system is implemented with Microsoft Technologies. (http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/helpdesk/)
