Dr. Vasos Vassiliou is an Associate Professor with the Computer Science Department of the University of Cyprus and the co-Director of the Networks Research Laboratory (NetRL) at UCY (founded by Prof. A. Pitsillides).
He is also the Group Leader (since Nov. ‘17) of the Smart Networked Systems Research Group of the RISE Center of Excellence on Interactive Media, Smart Systems and Emerging Technologies, situated in Nicosia, Cyprus. Dr. Vassiliou has been appointed by the Senate of the University of Cyprus to the Board of Directors of CYNET, the National Research and Educational Network, where he serves as the Chair (Nov. '16 - Feb. '21) and Vice-chair (since Feb. ' 21).
Dr. Vassiliou held the positions of Assistant Professor at the Computer Science Department of INTERCOLLEGE (Sep. 2002-Jan. 2004), and Visiting Lecturer (Jan 2004-Aug. 2005), Lecturer (Aug 2005-Aug. 2011) and Assistant professor (Aug. 2011-Oct 2019) at the Computer Science Department of the University of Cyprus.
He is a graduate of the Higher Institute of Technology (HTI, HND in Electrical Engineering, 1993) and the University of South Florida (USF, BSc. in Electrical Engineering, 1997). He did his graduate studies with partial CASP scholarship from the Cyprus Fulbright Commission at the Georgia Institute of Technology (GaTech, MSc in Electrical Engineering, 1999 and Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, 2002).
Dr. Vassiliou is a Senior Member of both the IEEE and ACM. He is the Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Cyprus Chapter, part of the IBM Academic Initiative, and the Academic Advocate for the ISACA Cyprus Chapter.
Dr. Vassiliou’s research interests revolve around protocol design and performance aspects of networks (fixed, mobile, wireless), in particular mobility management, QoS adaptation and control, resource allocation techniques, wireless sensor networks, and Internet of Things.
He has more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed Academic Journals and International Conferences, with more than 1800 citations. Dr. Vassiliou is also in the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Telecommunication Systems – Springer and the Computer Networks Elsevier Journal, among others. He has been a member of the TPC for about 100 international conferences in his field and acted as the chair of various committees in more than 15 conference organizations.
Dr. Vassiliou has secured more than 2.0 Million Euros funding for projects he acted as PI and co-PI and assisted in attracting an additional 2.25 Million Euros by the Networks Research Lab he co-directs. Research projects he has been actively involved with include: the European Commission funded projects: VISORSURF, SENDING, GINSENG, C-CAST, BBONE, SEACORN; the COST Actions: CS20120 INTERACT, CA15104 Iracon, IC0906 Winemo, IC1003 Qualinet; the National Research Promotion Foundation (RPF) funded projects: MIND2C, ΝΕΤ6, BINTEO; and the University of Cyprus project grants IDS4IoT, SMIDS, and ADAVIDEO.
