CS Other Presentations

Department of Computer Science - University of Cyprus

Besides Colloquiums, the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cyprus also holds Other Presentations (Research Seminars, PhD Defenses, Short Term Courses, Demonstrations, etc.). These presentations are given by scientists who aim to present preliminary results of their research work and/or other technical material. Other Presentations serve as a forum for educating Computer Science students and related announcements are disseminated to the Department of Computer Science (i.e., the csall list):

Abstract:
In this seminar, Joeran Beel will present ‘Docear’ (www.docear.org) and its recommender system for research papers. Docear is an academic literature suite that offers to scientists what an office suite, like Microsoft Office, offers to office workers. While an office suite bundles various applications for office workers (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, etc.), Docear bundles several applications for scientists: academic search engine, PDF reader, reference manager, word processor, mind mapping, and recommender system. The presentation will cover how the recommender system analyzes the users’ data in order to recommend research papers that might be relevant to the user. The presentation covers different aspects such as how to evaluate recommender systems, and which elements of the users’ mind maps to analyze to create relevant content-based recommendations.

Short Bio:
Joeran Beel‘s research career began about ten years ago when he won second prize in Jugend Forscht, Germany’s largest and most reputable youth science competition. Since then Joeran has published several books and papers and founded a software development business which won several prizes on business plan contests. In 2007, he graduated with distinction at OvG-University (Germany), in the field of computer science and obtained an MSc in Project Management at Lancaster University (UK). In 2009, Joeran started his PhD at Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg (OvGU). The focus of his PhD lies on developing a research paper recommender system for the reference management software Docear (www.docear.org). Joeran also pursued his research at the University of California, Berkeley where he worked as a visiting researcher between 2010 and 2012 (multiple visits, each for a few months). Currently, Joeran is visiting the University of Cyprus and is doing research on academic recommender systems, in cooperation with Dr. Georgia Kapitsaki.
