The project

Theme of the project

The creation of high quality online educational material by higher education institutions and medical associations is often hindered due to the extra development cost, time required and the lack of know-how on international education standards. Increasing growth rates and strengthening innovation capacities through the dissemination of innovative educational activities is necessary to countries seeking cohesion in economic performance and sustainable development. An interactive pool of resources respecting international education standards will serve undergraduate, post-graduate and continuing Medical Education institutions, along with other relevant initiatives, through the provision of quality material evaluated from medical experts.

Summary of the project

The partnership will update its previous knowledge on the highly specialised topic of Content Repositories and on the relevant standards used such as SCORM/LOM and IEEE LOM. It will install and configure a Content Repository and its supporting mechanisms.

Educational material in medical schools is relatively underdeveloped; medical associations do not have the know-how to create educational resources. Moreover, universities at rural areas have difficulties in offering a wide range of specialised topics in their curriculum because of lack of specialized personnel. The repository created by WideMEDnet will be filled with learning material mainly developed under the IntraMEDnet project.

The partnership will undertake extended promotion activities (workshops, seminars, Information Event, publications) in order to disseminate information on the content repository and encourage institutions to embrace innovation and adopt the use of the system.

Expected results of this project, which aims at the creation of a wide medical education institutions’f alliance, will enhance higher medical education as well as continuing education in medical professions. Results are expected to include improvement of health services, while direct beneficiaries are faculties and students of the institutions, the educational content developers, teachers, physicians as well as the receivers of a quality European healthcare system.

Origin of the project

The proposed project is built upon an INTERREG III partnership (Archimed: IntraMEDnet, Contract Nr. 027867), to be concluded successfully in October 2008, which initiated and deployed joint activities on medical education and research. The aim of the present application is the capitalization and extension of previous successful outcomes by tackling advanced needs of collaboration and cost-effective results.
