Distributed Multimedia Systems

Distributed Multimedia Systems

G. A. Papadopoulos

Modelling Multimedia Systems has become a very important activity due to the additional complexity that must be faced when one deals with the specialized knowledge inherent in Multimedia. Modelling addresses a number of issues related to Multimedia development such as efficient representation, processing, interaction, integration and retrieval of multimedia information. The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of pattern-based techniques and methodologies to address some of the above questions. Combining Multimedia Technology with Distributed Computing is another active area of research since a number of Multimedia-based applications (e.g., teleconferencing, distance learning, dedicated Multimedia servers, etc.) can only be realized in a distributed environment. We also investigate the use of coordination models in developing frameworks for Distributed Multimedia Systems in such a way that they would exploit reusability of existing components, integration of heterogeneous components and parallel execution.

This work is done in cooperation with the Department of Interactive Systems at CWI (the Netherlands).
