Graduate Program > Ph.D Program

Ph.D. Program

Introduction
The placement of a postgraduate student at the Ph.D. level is normally decided at the beginning of graduate studies. During the first year the student completes his/her general teaching requirements, while at the same time s/he studies specialized research topics. The placement of a student at the Ph.D. level signals the beginning of the research part of his/her programme, the duration of which is at least two years. In order for a student to be eligible to submit his/her thesis, s/he must successfully take, no later than the fifth semester, a qualifying examination, and submit a research proposal which is accepted by the Department. The examination of a Ph.D. thesis involves an open presentation by the student of his/her research work and an oral examination by a five-member committee, consisting of three internal and two external members.

For every student at the research stage of the Ph.D., the department appoints a Research Supervisor. The candidate student selects a member of the academic staff who is willing to undertake the supervision of the student as his/her Research Supervisor. The student's choice must be approved by the Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator. The Research Supervisor guides the student in his/her research and provides the necessary help and advice.

Admission to a Ph.D. programme requires high academic qualifications in Computer Science and the ability on the part of the Department to supervise the research topic that is of interest to the student.
